Greenwich Observatory (planetarium)

Updated: Jan 7

We visited Greenwich Planetarium, it was a really good experience as it was both fun and educational.

We attended to see a kids show, we saw Ted's Space Adventure, this was for kids under 7. The cost for any show at the planetarium is £12.00 for an adult and £6.00 for a child.

On the day we attended we were also visiting the Cutty Sark, so I drove and parked in the carpark located on Park Road as that is the carpark included when purchasing any ticket for the Royal Museums. The planetarium is a 12 minute walk from there, which is fine, except it is important to note that a very steep hill is included in the walk. When we got to the top I saw that there is a carpark at the top of the hill next to the planetarium (which I think needs to be accessed via Blackheath), if you have any mobility issues or even a heavy pram definitely check out where you are parking or how you are accessing the site.

The planetarium is at the top of the hill located in the picture.

Once inside the planetarium it is a bit like a cinema but instead of the screen being ahead of you, your seats are tilted back and you are looking at the ceiling.

The seating is not able to be reserved and works on a first come first serve basis. I understand that to get the best view, you need to be sitting towards the back and centre. Me and Elijah had those seats, so were happy. However, I have seen reviews where people who were seated at the front have complained that they couldn't see everything. (So basically arrive early guys!!)

The show we saw, 'Ted's space adventure' was informative, and quite interactive, it was 30 minutes and held the children's attention. I will say though, that Elijah (who is 6) is really into space and so knew the answers and found the show a little bit basic. He did still like the experience as it was still fun, but we will be attending again and are planning to try out one of the other family shows.

When looking at some of the other shows, it says recommended for kids aged 7+, and that kids under 5 are not allowed, which leaves kids aged 6 in a bit of a grey area but having asked a member of staff it seems it will be fine for him to attend.

I personally liked the experience and would go again.
