Our latest trip out took us to Substation in Brixton, a bouldering/rock climbing centre with a kids area called 'The Wild'.
A session in ‘The Wild’ lasts 90 minutes, and costed £9.50 for Elijah, there is no charge for parents/carers, if you are not climbing.
The wild room is for ages 2 and above and kids must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Each adult can have a maximum of 2 children with them.
The sessions needs to be booked in advance, and you have to sign a waiver before you start, but this can be emailed to you before you get there, which does save time.
When you get there, you show the tickets that you have purchased on your phone, they confirm that you have done the waiver. If you have not, you have the opportunity to do it then. After that they provide shoes for your child/children.
I found this one a bit hard to review, this is because at first as I was watching Elijah wiz up and down the walls without much challenge, I thought it should have been bigger or more complicated. But then, I was watching other kids who it was really stretching and so I have to remember to consider that Elijah is very good at climbing. I cannot imagine what they would build that he wouldn’t be able to climb, plus he was really enjoying it and wants to go again. Therefore, as a parent I think you just need to consider your child’s ability levels to decide if it is worth it or not. Whilst I was there I also met a parent who said her daughters motor skills had been a bit delayed, and coming to the substation regularly has become a big part in working on developing those skills.
I think kids up until the age of about 10 would enjoy this activity, over 10 might get a bit bored or not find it challenging enough, but overall it was a good experience, we would repeat it and the staff at the desk were really friendly and helpful.
